We learned last year that the kids are going to get up early, so this year we had a 6:30 wake up call. Once in again it was them waking us, they got up at 5:00. After making a pancake breakfast we started our science lessons for the day with the same idea of the theme Basic Training.

In this lesson students experimented and tested various household items that would create an explosion. The water rocket took off seconds later to a height above the trees.
A diet coke explosion made for a funny picture. Looks like bouncing foam.
Learning about levers and how they are used to make catapults. Students launched water balloons.
Then they made mini catapults of their own to launch beans onto a target.
Students learned about trajectory by using sling shots to shoot off various objects at cans.
Then their aim and accuracy were tested by shooting paintballs at a target.

Finally students learned about defense in war and the importance of a good shield like this Ironman.
And they learned to think about different strategies like the turtle shell.
Before it all ended in a final science application of an egg war. Each team constructed their defense and then were given 3 eggs. If you got hit by an egg you were out. In the end Fernando captured two eggs and received the Bravest Soldier Award for taking an egg in the mouth but then getting back up and capturing a second flag. What a warrior! And this is what we call science outside of the classroom.

SO FUN! I guess I need to come to you for fun new science ideas! What a great experience for the kids!
