Last year was a hit so we did it again! We took our 4th, 5th, and 6th graders on an overnight retreat. The kids were squirming in their seats all week in anticipation of this event. Who could blame them, 2 school days of learning without paper and pencils.
Our theme was Basic Training. All of our chapel and science lessons for the two days had this focus.
Pastor David lead the kids in 4 great chapel sessions to teach them what it means to be a warrior. Kids learned in various ways how to be alert, stay focused, don't give up, and be a champion.
A warrior needs to have perseverance. Teams learned this lesson by melting a block of ice, with their bums, to get to a penny. I laughed hard watching their strategies. Students would sit on the ice for as long as they could and then find a hot, sunny place to warm them up again. I do believe they felt some pain.
Teams also learned about team work by building a boat from cardboard boxes and a roll of duct tape. When all the boats were constructed they had to paddle them across the pool. If the boat sunk they had to drag it to the finish line. Once again it was rather funny to watch all the different styles and strategies teams attempted.

All the kids were divided into four teams and each team was given a color. These teams participated in all the events together. Each team made a flag to boost their team spirit and for use in the following day's activities.
